Local lawyers see in his passing the loss of a giant.
A love of debate, an analytical mind and a way with words prepared him for law. But it was a passion for the profession that sent him to the top.
“Grant used to always say, and we always shared, that, ‘We are lawyers for the right reason: to represent people,’ ” said Bill Mills, who was a partner with Mr. Gruel for 17 years at Gruel, Mills, Nims & Pylman, started in 1985 with Clark Nims and Skip Pylman.
