Discrediting the witness

The fifth basic concept is Impeachment, the discrediting of a witness by cross examination or by other admissible evidence. The bases for impeachment are:
1. Bias
2. Interest in outcome
3. Prior inconsistent statements
4. Certain prior convictions
5. Bad reputation for truthfulness
6. Prior bad acts
7. Contradiction
8. Lack of first hand knowledge
9. Mental defect
