The last basic concept is the area of Privileges (MRE/FRE 501). While a trial involves the search for truth, that goal must yield at times to other interests. These interests promote public policies, such as confidentiality necessary to relationships:
1. Attorney-client.
2. Physician-patient.
3. Psychotherapist-patient.
4. Husband-wife.
The three major exceptions to arising when a party either:
1. places the matters in issue,
2. waives the confidentiality by disclosing the information to someone else, or
3. opens the door to admission of the evidence.
